Electrolysis vs Laser

Although laser treatments can be said to offer “permanent hair reduction,” electrolysis has been proven to permanently remove hair, follicle by follicle. Please read our Electrology Section to learn more about permanent hair removal.

Listed here are some of the more important differences between Laser and Electrolysis:

  • Laser produces the best results with dark hair on light skin, but cannot be used on blond, white, or red hair. There are some lasers that are effective on darker skin tones, but the process takes longer. Electrolysis, however, works on all skin and hair combinations.
  • Laser cannot be used on eyebrows. Electrolysis is perfect for shaping eyebrows.
  • Laser cannot be used in proximity to any tattoo. Electrolysis can be used on tattooed areas, although it is always possible that some touching up of the tattoo might be necessary after treatments.
  • Electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal. Laser can remove some of the hairs permanently, but is not able to remove it all permanently. Laser is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. In some cases, it can actually cause more hair growth. Usually, laser is only semi-permanent. The hairs seem finer, and they start coming back little by little.
  • Laser is a good method for larger areas such as backs, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini areas, providing the hair is dark and the skin is light. It clears the area quicker as it is done with a laser light (requiring the client to wear protective glasses). Electrolysis is done one hair at a time using magnification and skill.
  • I never recommend laser for the face. Laser can stimulate more hair growth and will require much more electrolysis in the end.
